The Medical Conditions Requiring TVM Surgery

Trans-vaginal mesh is familiar to women in various places of the world.   This device is used by physicians to help relieve the signs and symptoms of Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) and Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI), which are mainly present in aged women, by reinforcing the vaginal wall to restore the vaginal anatomy and improve sexual health. Most adult women regardless of race are experiencing POP and SUI.  The most at risk of developing these conditions are the women who have gone through menopause, hysterectomy, and childbirth.

When does Pelvic Organ Prolapse occur

Pelvic Organ Prolapse happens when the connective tissues that support the vaginal wall elongate and weaken.  Old age and previous experiences of hysterectomy and vaginal delivery account for the loss of elasticity in the tissues of the vaginal wall.

Although there are many types of POP, the main types are bladder prolapse, urethrocele, uterine prolapse, and rectocele.  Bladder prolapse is the most usual.  This occurs when the bladder sticks out into the vaginal wall.  Urethrocele is when the urethra puffs out into the vagina.  Moreover, rectocele is the exposure of some parts of the rectum into the back wall of the vagina, and uterine prolapse is the sinking of the uterus into the vagina.

Stress Urinary Incontinence

Stress Urinary Incontinence is not a symptom of POP.  It is the uncontrollable passage of urine from the bladder on coughing and sneezing, or other abrupt activities.  Most likely, it results when the urethra is hyperactive due to weakened pelvic muscles.

Brief History of Trans-vaginal Mesh

Initially, surgical mesh was used for the repair of hernia in 1950. Two decades later, medical practitioners found out that it can be used in the management of POP abdominally.  It was then in 1990 that surgeons discovered that it can be successfully implanted through the vagina.  There are approximately 250,000 cases of TVM procedures recorded as of today.

Despite the fact that TVM surgery was not properly tested, it was introduced to be practiced because it favorably alleviated the symptoms of POP and SUI at first, and non-mesh procedures were not effective in several cases.  On the other hand, TVM lawsuits are filed at an increasing rate in the United States as serious injuries have affected many recipients of the vaginal mesh recently.

The long term effectiveness of POP surgery with surgical mesh is not properly founded by research and clinical trials. More then that, women undergoing this surgery may expect repeated surgeries to correct the problems caused by the mesh. In most cases the damages done by the synthetic mesh can be so severe that affects the day to day activities as well as the private life of the patients.

These mesh products were the hope of the patients who previously suffered incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse. But instead of making it's patients feel good, they however cause a lot of problems more than the mesh was supposed to treat in the first place. There's no wonder why we can read stories online about patients who suffered from their mesh implant and how it lead them into filing a transvaginal mesh lawsuit against product manufacturers. I hope these defective products can be recalled at once so as not to harm more victims.
